Creating a personalized print starts long before the design process begins. It starts with the photo. The right picture can make the most difference - from a fun idea into something truly special and iconic. Not just something that looks great but instantly feels like them. That moment when someone sees the final result and says "thats actually my pet" is exactly what you are aiming for. And the good news is, you don´t need a professional camera or a perfectly staged shoot to get there.
What matters most i clarity. A clear, well´lit photo gives the best foundation for any design. When you can easily see your pet´s eyes, expression and features thru the photo. Then it will become much easier to capture their personality in the final design. Blurry or dark images will make it much harder to bring out those details that make your pet unique.
Here we have three different pictures of the same lovely dog. In the first one the background is good but you can´t see the eyes. In picture number two the light from the daylight and the one eye being visible is good, but the background isn´t the best. Then you have picture number three, good lightning so you get both eyes and the pets natural colors.
Just as important is choosing a photo that reflects who your pet really is. Every animal has its own personality - some are energetic and playful, others are calm, proud or just a little bit sassy and dramtic. The best results come from images that capture that natural expression. It´s not about perfection, it´s about recognition.
The angle and composition also play a bigger role than most people think. Photos taken from too far away or at extreme angles can make it difficult to clearly see your pet´s face and proportions. A more straightforward photo, where your pet is sitting or standing naturally often works best. It gives a clean base to build on and to transform them into something entirely new - like a sports legend.
Don´t use angles like this Take it straight forward
Backgrounds don´t have to be perfect, but the simpler the better. A busy or cluttered background can distract from what really matters. It will make the design cleaner and more focused.
Lighting is a another small detail that makes a big difference. Natural light, especially from a window or outdoors, helps bring out texture and colors in a way that feels souf and ture to life. Harsh shadows or heavy filters can take away from that, so keeping things as possible is usually the best choice.
And if you´re unsure, you´re not alone. If you have few different photos and are unsure of whitch one is the best, its completly normal. In those cases, having options is always better. Sometimes the smallest details - a look, a tilt of the head or a certain expression - is what makes one image stand out from the others.
At the end of the day, the "perfect" photo isn´t about techical perfection. It´s about capturing something real. Something familiar. Something that makes the final design feel personal in that moment you see it.
That´s what turns a simple image from your phone into something worth keeping and wearing - for a long time. So start snapping pictures and you´re only a few clicks away from your very own retro sports legend shirt!
